Road Safety and parking

Road Safety and Parking
A speed limit of 40 km applies in the school area between 7.00 - 9.00 am and 2.00 - 4.00 pm on school days. At other times a 50km limit applies.
A Crossing Supervisor over-sees the Boundary Road pedestrian crossing each school day from 8.00 - 9.00 am and 2.55 - 3.25 pm. Please follow the Crossing Supervisor’s directions and stand behind the yellow line on the footpath and wait for the Supervisor to blow the whistle before crossing the road.
Active School Travel
Rainworth State School is part of the Brisbane City Council’s Active School Travel Program which aims to reduce traffic congestion around schools and improve road safety awareness by encouraging parents, staff and, most importantly, children to walk, cycle, car pool or use public transport to get to school.
We encourage you not to bring your car into the immediate school area during peak times by:
- walking to/from school with your child;
- parking your car further away and enjoying a short walk to/from school with your child (“park & stride”);
- car pooling; and
- staggering your drop off and pick up times by coming 5-10 minutes earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Every Wednesday is Walking Wheeling Wednesday. All families are encouraged to join in by leaving their car at home, or parking 500 metres away, in order to reduce traffic congestion and enjoy the health benefits.
Two Walking School Buses operate on Wednesday mornings, one from Victoria Crescent and one from Rambler Street. Adults from the Rainworth school community, who have been trained by Brisbane City Council, walk small groups of children to school. The routes have been checked for hazards and the adults hold blue cards. Maps of the routes and an enrolment form are available on the School’s website. Children must be enrolled before joining a Walking School Bus.
Parking
- Parking in the Boundary Road and Runic Street carparks is restricted to staff only. Parents are not permitted to use these entrances without prior approval from the school office. There is no pedestrian access on the Boundary Road driveway, with the exception of parents pushing prams/strollers or children wheeling their bicycles into school.
- There are several restricted zones around the school. Please become familiar with the signs and adhere to the requirements. You must stay with your car in zones marked “Passenger Zone” or “Loading Zone”.
- Ample unrestricted parking is available a short walk from school.
- Note that police hand out speeding and parking fines in the school area.
Two minute zones
- There are three two minute passenger loading zones where cars can drop off and pick up children: two on Boundary Rd and one on Main Ave.
- A two-minute zone is like a quick-moving taxi rank. The zone works best when drivers "stop, drop and go". Aim to spend as little time as safely possible in the zone so that there's a continuous flow of users.
- Do not leave your car. Parking is an offence.
- Plan your trip to avoid arrival at peak times. In the afternoon, don't arrive too early. Allow your child plenty of time to get to the zone - your child should be waiting for you, you shouldn't be waiting for your child. If your passenger is not ready and waiting for you to pick them up, drive around the block to rejoin the queue.
- If the zone is full of cars, you also need to move on – it’s illegal to double-park outside the zone.
Bicycles
- Children must dismount and not ride their bikes in school grounds.
- Bicycles must be parked in the bicycle cage behind Block E.
- Bicycle helmets must be worn by students when riding.
You can protect your children by:
- Not letting them walk out onto the road to put bags in the boot or to get into a double parked car.
- Making sure they enter/exit the car on the kerb side.
- Not making U-turns in the school area.
