Have you thought about protecting your childrens’ eyes?
While many people know to cover their skin in the sun, protecting eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation is often forgotten. A recent UNSW study found alarming rates of damage in children as young as 8 years of age. They found 26% of children aged between 9 and 10 had signs of sun damage in their eyes and 81% in the age group between 12 and 15yrs of age (*).
Experts say that damage to eyes can be prevented by wearing wrap-around sunglasses and hats.
Rainworth's policy of wide-brimmed hats is to be applauded, and you can do even more to protect your children's eyes by encouraging them to wear their sunglasses at school.
To help encourage children to wear sunglasses, participating optometry practices are giving away 100% UV-protective sunglasses to all children who ask nicely! It's a way of protecting eyes from harmful UV rays.
So especially during summer … slip, slop, slap and slide on the sunnies!!!
