Stop! Are you carrying your bag the right way?
Recent studies show the average student lugs more than 5kg to and from school each day. These studies show there are definite links between loads carried and reports of neck and back pain …particularly in young students with developing spines. So what makes a bag “good” and how can you minimise risk to your back and neck?
Choose the right bag – it should:
- Fit the body comfortably
- Doesn’t extend above the shoulders when seated
- Has straps that are broad, well padded and adjustable
- Has a waist strap to keep the load in place
- Is padded where it touches your back, and made of firm material to prevent your bag sagging
The school sells backpacks which, when worn properly, will help distribute that load more evenly … however they are not a one size fits all – you must make sure you adjust the straps to fit your child!
Pack Smart
- Try not to carry too many heavy books on the same day
- Plan ahead – try not to carry sports equipment, musical equipment, art materials and heavy books all on the same day
- Pack the heaviest items closet to your body and at the base of you bag
Carry Smart
- Use both shoulder straps when you use your backpack
- Use the packs waist strap to keep the load in place as you walk/ cycle
- When packed make sure your bag doesn’t sag or pull you backwards
- Don’t carry your pack for too long – put it down and rest when you are able
