Curriculum:Italian

Italian language and culture classes are taught at Rainworth from prep through to year 7, making it one of the few schools in Queensland to offer such a comprehensive LOTE ( Languages Other Than English) programme.
The Italian program has been able to develop and grow over the years thanks also to the support and contributions made by Co.As.It. (Italian Australian Welfare Association Inc.) in the provision of funding and resources.
Italian is integrated in school life through a regular newsletter column “News from the Embassy”, during weekly parades and with the roles played by the “Italian Captains”( two year 7 students are elected to this position every year).
There is an Italian element to school wide annual celebrations such as the Easter Hat Parade and the Christmas Crackers Bilingual Concert as well as in culture specific events like Carnevale (end of term 1), Festa della Repubblica (Italian National Day- 2 June), Festa Dei Nonni (Grandparent’s Day- October) and Ferrari Day (March).
A highlight of the Italian calendar is the Rainworth International Football Challenge aka the Sam Reiser Cup between school teams dubbed the Socceroos and the Azzurri. The competition is open to all students from year 3 to year 7 and the matches are played to great anticipation at the end of term 3.
Students are able to and encouraged to participate in language events and competitions such as the Dante Alighieri Verse Speaking Competition (held at Griffith University in late August), the ACER Assessment of Language Competence nationwide listening tests (early August), the Italian Week concert event at Southbank (June) and the various Italian Language Week activities (October).
The Italian mural, which is the centre point of our beautiful covered area “La Piazza”, was painted by students during 2007-2008 - testament that Italian is truly part of the culture of Rainworth State School.
