Curriculum:Music

Music  Rainworth State School offers a wide variety of opportunities for students to develop their musical abilities. As part of the classroom music program, every class has a weekly half-hour music lesson with a specialist music teacher.

The Instrumental Music Program provides free tuition to students wishing to learn brass, woodwind, percussion or stringed instruments.

Starting in Year 3, children are eligible to be included in the strings program; children from Year 5 up are eligible to be included in the brass, woodwind and percussion program.

Junior and senior choirs, as well as a recorder ensemble, offer further opportunities for children to develop their musical talents.

Rainworth instrumental students participate in a number of extracurricular musical activities including the Gap Region Instrumental Primary Performers School (GRIPPS), choir competitions and instrumental and band competitions.  Click here for more about GRIPPS.

Instrumental Music Program Selection Process  Strings - violin/cello/viola are started in Year 3 and Band - brass/woodwind/percussion in Year 5.  Selection begins in the year before commencement.  For more information about the selection process, the necessary parent and student committment and material costs, please see the Music Program Information Booklet here.

How does music assist learning?  It is well known that children who participate in music programs demonstrate a significant improvement in their scholastic endeavours. 

• Music has structure and rules (as does language).
• Music ensures that the words are sequenced in a predictable order.
• Music offers a fun opportunity to learn new words and concepts through repetition (an important factor when helping to improve a child’s language skills).
• Music encourages turn-taking behaviours (just like in conversation).
• Music has rhythm (enabling actions to be combined with words to reinforce word meanings.
• Music has rhyme (encouraging children to become aware of words and their sounds, which assists with developing their literacy skills).
• Music assists children to remember new words (particularly once the child has learnt the tune).
• Music helps attention and listening skills.
• Music and movement assists physical development and coordination skills.
• Music motivates children to socialise, assisting emotional development.
• Musical involvement is known to enhance self-esteem and confidence.
